7 Local Markets In Canggu: All The Best Markets In The Area

Whether you’re in the mood for second-hand clothing, wood carvings, good food, artisan goods, organic produce, handmade jewelry or something else entirely, you must visit the markets in Canggu when you stay in the area.

We’ve put together a simple guide to help you find the best markets in the area and to get the most out of your time market shopping in Canggu.

Things You Need To Know About Shopping In Popular Markets In Canggu

Before you head out the door to stock up on handmade goods, delicious food, woven baskets, straw bags, etc. we’d recommend that you prepare yourself for the markets in Canggu.

  • Cash is king – the vast majority of vendors at the many markets around Bali simply don’t take cards. Get some money out at the ATM if you want to spend at the various stalls in the markets. This can be a great way to set a budget and keep to it too. (or visit a money changer in Canggu).
  • Disguise your intent – haggling is part and parcel of the shopping experience here in Bali and while there’s always a lively atmosphere when you’re actually haggling, the best negotiating position to start with is one where you’re not showing too much interest. Most vendors know that if you’re very excited, they don’t have to bargain too hard to get you to pay up.
  • Haggle but do so respectfully – when you haggle the vendor offers an initial price, you offer a lesser one and you go back and forth in a friendly (and often funny) manner until you agree on a price or you walk away. You can walk away at any point in the negotiations but you should never walk away once you’ve agreed to a price, it’s downright rude and you must keep things friendly and respectful at all times. It’s meant to be fun not a fight to the death.
  • Get there early in the day – one thing many visitors won’t know is that vendors are often prepared to give their best price on the first sale of the day. That’s because the first sale is “lucky” and is meant to set up the trend for the rest of the day. You also get to avoid the worst of the crowds at any given market as most people in Bali tend to get to everything late.
  • Take your own bag – Bali has a serious plastic problem, don’t contribute to it. Use a reusable tote bag or shoulder bag and carry your own goods once you’ve refined the treasure trove of goodies laid out before you.

FAQs

What Is The Main Shopping Street In Canggu?

The main shopping street in Canggu is Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong which is the road that runs down to Batu Bolong Beach from Jalan Raya Canggu.

This street is covered with boutique fashion stores, restaurants and cafes and is also home to Love Anchor Market (as mentioned above).

It can be very busy at times and while it is walkable, the volume of people can make it a bit challenging to navigate.

That’s why we prefer to shop on Jalan Pantai Berawa which has almost as many amenities but without the same volume of crowds.

Is Seminyak Or Canggu Better For Shopping?

Seminyak has long been the big name in shopping in Bali and there’s no doubt that the two malls there make it easy to shop local fashion brands without too much walking.

However, it’s also no longer quite on the cutting edge of fashion thanks to the stability of the market there.

If you wander around Canggu, particularly down some of the side streets, you’re more likely to encounter new and more experimental brands.

Both areas are home to some of the big-name brands here in Bali, so you won’t miss out, wherever you decide to go.

Overall, we’d say that Seminyak is still better for shopping than Canggu but there’s not much in it.

Where Do People Go Out In Canggu?

The two most popular destinations in Canggu are Jalan Pantai Batu Blong and Jalan Pantai Berawa. These are the two big beach roads in the area and they are full of stores, restaurants and bars.

FINNS Beach Club is the most popular single destination in the area and you will find that at the end of Jalan Pantai Berawa. The beach club is one of the main reasons that people come to Bali in the first place and 1 in 8 visitors to the island will spend some time there.

They don’t call FINNS the world’s best beach club for nothing, either. It’s unparalleled in terms of the quality of the entertainment there, excellent food, top-level service, sunset view and more.

What Is The Busiest Street In Canggu?

There are two exceptionally busy roads in Canggu. The first is Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong, the road to Batu Bolong beach which is very popular with tourists and is crowded all day long, particularly towards the late afternoon and evening.

The other is Jalan Raya Canggu which is the main arterial road that connects Canggu to the rest of the island. There are some restaurants, bars and shops on this road but it’s definitely more of a location frequented by locals and expats rather than tourists.

Why Is Canggu, Bali So Popular?

Canggu is popular because it offers the best mix of things to do and places to stay in Bali at the moment.

It has overtaken Seminyak, which is very popular still with the young and affluent, as the place to be on the island.

From its vibrant market scene to its art scene to FINNS Beach Club, there’s so much to see and do in this part of Bali that you’ll never grow bored.

And while it is being developed rapidly, it’s still not overdeveloped unlike Kuta, Legian and Seminyak, its near neighbours.

What Is The Best Thing To Buy In Bali Markets?

You can find plenty of things that you might enjoy buying while visiting markets in Canggu but we’d recommend that you try some fresh produce that you can only find in Bali and look for handmade crafts from local artisans that you can’t replicate anywhere else.

Other than supporting local artisans and local farmers, we love the eclectic mix of vintage clothing and typical Bali souvenirs that each market offers.

One thing you won’t find much of is local brands of clothing as they tend to have their own boutique stores, rather than stalls.

Final Thoughts On Canggu Market Options

There may not be quite as many local markets in Canggu, Bali as there used to be but it still has many of the best markets on the island.

Just remember to bring cash and arrive early if you want to get the best deals from market stalls in Bali.

Most of all, remember that haggling is part of the local culture and it is fully expected at most of the best markets in Canggu. The perfect market experience is one where the shop owners leave you with enough cash to enjoy a cold drink afterwards.
