This may be our favourite warung for Balinese cuisine anywhere in Bali. The food here is affordable, delicious and amazing value all-in-one.

The service staff are friendly and warm and will always strive to make you feel at home and to answer any questions that you may have about the food.

We can recommend their fish skewers and eggplant with chili sauce to anyone, they’re so tasty that you’ll never forget them.

It’s kind of Indonesia’s answer to the Japanese bento box theme and you will find that they make some very tasty dishes that are really well presented.

You can mix and match several dishes in your box and always walk away with a meal that you love. The only downside is that there’s no air con here.

They have a nicely varied menu and the staff are super friendly. They are also amenable to digital nomads plugging in and working while they dine.

Our only complaint is that while the food is cheap, the coffee is not and we can’t quite work out why, it’s good coffee but not that good.

This excellent warung specializes in local BBQ food and it’s extremely delicious and the ladies who cook here are very nice, indeed.

We’d be happy to eat their BBQ chicken and rice for weeks on end if we had to, it’s always fresh and tasty and so cheap!

The only downside of eating here is that the front is open to the road and you can hear the passing cars and trucks, but don’t let that worry you, the food is so good that it compensates entirely for a little noise.

Many people say that this little warung is the best place to enjoy babi guling in Bali and it’s certainly in the top 10 babi guling restaurants we’ve tried.

It’s very reasonably priced and a generous plate of pork, veggies and rice comes in at less than 75,000 IDR ($5 USD or $7.50 AUD) with a drink and a starter! Their spicy soup is a great way to kick off the meal.

FAQs

What Are Traditional Balinese Dishes?

There are many traditional dishes in Bali including nasi goreng (fried rice), mie goreng (fried noodles), sate lilit (fish/chicken/beef/turtle satay), and babi guling (roast pork).

You should easily be able to try most Balinese dishes in the warungs of Canggu.

What Is Bali’s Signature Dish?

There is no official “signature dish” of Bali but we’d say that it if there was one, it would probably be “babi guling” which is “roast pig”.

This is a unique item in Indonesia because much of the archipelago is Muslim and Muslims are forbidden to eat pork.

However, in Bali, there is a Hindu majority and pork dishes are very common. While sate babi (pork satay) is super popular, it’s the babi guling that gets the most attention. It’s very similar to lechon in the Philippines, but served in smaller portions.

How To Avoid Bali Belly?

“Bali Belly” is a catch-all term that covers communicable diseases, food poisoning, traveller’s diarrhea and more. That means you cannot guarantee avoiding Bali Belly anywhere on Earth.

However, you can reduce the chances of stomach problems in Bali by:

  • Eating hot food when it’s hot and ensuring it’s cooked all the way through
  • Eating from popular street food stands, if there’s a queue in front of you, the odds are pretty good that you’re going to be eating fresh food
  • Avoiding pre-made salads and pre-sliced fruit – they’re often washed in contaminated water
  • Avoiding drinking from the tap under any circumstances even when brushing your teeth – use bottled water only (you don’t need to worry about ice in Bali, it is always made from filtered water)
  • Washing your hands before and after every meal and avoiding touching money, the floor, your shoes, etc. during a meal

Should You Tip In A Balinese Warung?

While there is a law requiring businesses in Bali to charge tax and service charges and to spell them out on their menu, small businesses such as humble warungs are exempt for this law.

However, there’s no tipping culture on the island and while tips are always welcome, they’re not  expected either.

If you want to tip in a warung, you would normally round off the bill to the nearest 10 or 20,000 IDR ($0.75-$1.50 USD or $1-$2 AUD).

A larger tip would be considered extremely generous and a tip of over 100,000 IDR ($6 USD or $10 AUD) is practically unheard of.

How Do You Say “Thank You, That Food Was Delicious” In Bahasa Indonesia?

“Terima kasih, itu makanan enak.” There is no verb “to be” in Indonesian, so this is more literally “thank you, that food delicious”.

Indonesian words are very easy to pronounce as they are are mainly read phonetically in syllables. Give it a try the next time you eat in a warung, they’ll love you for it.
