Bondi @ FINNS Beach Club

Bondi is ranked near the top of the TripAdvisor rankings for restaurants in Canggu and it’s should come as no surprise that it’s in the world’s best beach club, FINNS.

There’s a lot of choice on the menu at Bondi as it draws on several different kitchens to provide its customers with an unrivalled dining experience in Bali.

The Japanese side of things is covered by their Sushi Bar and the food is absolutely amazing and the chefs are Japanese.  (Check out all the best sushi places in Canggu).

Sama Sama Prime

Sama Sama is a premium Japanese BBQ restaurant and you will need to make a reservation in advance if you want to be guaranteed a seat at Sama Sama.

The decor is authentically Japanese and the high-chair dining against the grilling surface is very nice, indeed.

While the food is amazing, our favourite part of eating at Sama Sama is enjoying their amazing cocktail menu which is one of the most creative that we’ve encountered anywhere in the world.

Kenji Ramen

As you might expect, the star of the show at this Japanese restaurant is the ramen and you will find that it’s served in a delicate broth but never becomes sticky or unpleasantly textured.

We could happily guzzle down a bowl of the ramen here for lunch every day except for one thing – the gyoza.

The dumplings are even better and their fried gyoza are the ideal blend of crispy exterior and warm, sumptuous fillings that make us very happy indeed.

Indigo

The interior of Indigo is so authentic that you might think you’ve wandered off the street in Kyoto rather than in Canggu.

The design is amazing and it’s a warm, aesthetically pleasing space that really lends itself to enjoying and savouring your food.

There’s an emphasis on Japanese fusion in everything they prepare and all the ingredients are grown locally and are fresh and delicious.

Ji Restaurant Bali

Ji is one of our favourite spots for Japanese cuisine in Bali and one of the best things about dining here is the chance to sit on their rooftop and enjoy amazing views over the ocean.

Our don’t miss dish here is the sticky pork belly which is so good, we often order several portions of it between just two of us!

The wagyu beef is also excellent and the seafood dishes are among the best on the island. We also find that while it’s not cheap, Ji is great value for money.

Chow Chow Bali

Chow Chow is an awesome Asian fusion restaurant with some tasty Japanese fare on the menu. We’ve always found that everything they serve is practically bursting with flavour.

The Japanese pork ribs are one of our favourite dishes on the island and we can’t recommend eating at Chow Chow enough.

One thing we’d note is that they usually have a lunchtime special which makes dining here very cheap, indeed.

KOI Japanese Cooking

If you love dining to the sounds of Japanese jazz then we can heartily recommend enjoying a relaxed dinner at KOI.

Their salmon katsu and the sashimi are very good, indeed, and you’ll soon be coming back for more if you’re anything like us.

We’d also note that they offer Japanese cooking lessons at KOI, so if you want to learn some awesome kitchen skills with input from a real Japanese chef, this is the place to do it.

Yuki Bali

This stunning Japanese restaurant must be one of the most stylish places that you can eat anywhere in Asia, it looks like it should grace the cover of a magazine.

The service is also first rate and you’ll find from the moment that you’re seated to the moment you leave that you feel attended to and cared for as a person, rather than just as a customer.

However, the lighting is very low key which means if you love to take pictures of your food, you may be disappointed that it doesn’t look as good onscreen as it does in real life.

Where To Find It: 84RH+RM2, Canggu, Kuta Utara, Badung Regency, Bali, Indonesia

TYGR Sushi

TYGR sushi is all about delivering tasty Japanese food to the table quickly with no muss and no fuss. It’s a place to grab lunch with friends, rather than for a romantic dinner for two.

However, there’s no doubt that the quality of the food is very good, particularly in relation to the relatively low prices and you can get served quickly and well here.

They also offer a range of options for vegans and vegetarians if your party includes folks that would prefer a plant-based meal.

Billy Ho

This Asian Boteco restaurant is one of the more fine dining restaurants in Canggu and you can expect a range of Asian-inspired treats including some from Japan.

There’s no doubt that the food here is inventive and exciting, but we do think it’s also often a little on the sweeter side and that may not be entirely to everyone’s taste.

The cocktail menu is amazing though and their wine list is one of the most extensive that we’ve encountered here in Bali.

Tema Doma

This is one of the most authentically Japanese experiences in Canggu and there’s no doubt in our mind that the tranquil garden environment here is amazing.

The food is first rate and it’s very much home cooked fare using ingredients that have come from their own gardens and others that they have fermented onsite.

If you’re in the mood for a laidback evening with some of the finest Japanese comfort food that you’ve ever had – you’ll love Tema Doma.

Kunti 3 Sushi Bar

There are in fact, three Kunti Sushi Bars on the island and this is the third of them – the other two aren’t in Canggu, mind you – so don’t go looking for them if you’re in this area.

While their main focus is on sushi, they also have a broader menu where you can enjoy other treats from Japan and you know it’s authentic because one of the owners is Japanese.

One thing we really like about Kunti is how cheap it is and you’ll find that this is the sort of place that it’s very easy to become a regular at.

Enso Sushi Bali

Enso is something of a hidden gem and you’ll find that it’s not that well-known due to its slightly obscure location in one of the quieter parts of town.

However, it’s reasonably priced and they do some very good sushi. We’re not so keen on the rest of the menu, mind you, but it’s a good place to stack the sushi high and the varied menu on offer makes that easy to do.

They also make an excellent espresso martini and it’s a good place to visit when you’re warming up for a big night out.

Sushikoo

This is a small and cozy venue and there aren’t a huge number of tables so if you visit at peak times, you may need to wait a little longer to get a seat than you’d like.

However, there’s no doubt that their regular customers think it’s worth waiting for that table and Sushikoo is excellent value for money.

One thing you should know though is that as a small local business, they do sell out of things later in the day – so if you want the biggest range of choice, go early.

Shichirin Bali by Wonderspace

Shichirin is an upscale dining location in the Wonderspace chain which now has multiple outlets of varying cuisines across Bali.

The service here is outstanding and their waitstaff are among the friendliest and happiest people in Bali.

The gyukatsu and toro steak was the highlight of dining at Shichirn and we’ll definitely back one day when we’re feeling flush.

One-Eyed Jack

One-Eyed Jack is a restaurant that is dressed to impress its customers and there’s no doubt in our minds that they succeed in wowing you at first glance.

We like all the small and authentic Japanese touches around the place and it all looks amazing in your Instagram feed.

If you need gluten-free options, this is one of the places in Bali where the staff are fully aware of the challenges and can ensure you get what you need to eat.

Miss Fish Bali

You will need to dine early at Miss Fish because at 10 p.m. it turns into a nightclub but if you do, you’ll find that they have a super cheerful Japanese chef making great food.

The dishes are all very Instagram worthy and they have bold flavours to match their striking good looks.

The service is excellent and most nights diners can expect a visit to their table from the chef to delicately probe your requests and to offer you some samples of his favourite dishes.

SHUN Omakase Counter

SHUN is a carefully crafted experience with only 8 seats available for each seating, which means that you must make a reservation if you want to dine here.

There are two seating times at each meal and you can enjoy an incredible bespoke menu every time that you visit.

If you’re a foodie looking to take Japanese food to the next level, then SHUN might be just the place you’ve been looking for.
