The chicken satay is memorably tasty and has a very distinct identity when compared to even nearby Balinese places.

But perhaps the coolest thing about this place is the pair of mannequins guarding the toilets, their eyes seem to track wherever you go!

Ketela Eatery & LIfestyle

Ketela is a healthy eating style affair and the Indonesian dishes here are tailored to that lifestyle. Their garlic prawns on garlic fried rice still feel very decadent, though.

There’s an onsite pool here which makes it a great spot for a family meal, where the kids can play in the pool while the adults graze on the menu.

The best thing on the menu, from our perspective, is the duck betutu which may be the best of its kind in Bali.

Tulis Tiwa Canggu

This little business is owned and run by two local ladies who work really hard to deliver delicious food for reasonable prices.

Their tempe rice is one of the most stunning plant-based creations we’ve had the good fortune to try anywhere.

We’re also big fans of the lamb nasi goreng and their stir-fried beef bowl when plant-based isn’t quite enough to fill us up.

LACI Restaurant

Not every Indonesian restaurant in Canggu is a budget-friendly warung-style affair, Laci is an upmarket local restaurant with an inventive menu.

We find that it’s a very chill place to enjoy the food, dishes tend to arrive one-by-one (an unusual thing in Asia) and you can really relax and savour every bite.

We’d recommend that you opt for a seat in one of their open air cabanas as it’s the best way to enjoy the flavour of the island and the delicious food.

Kisah Rempah

This is an interesting spot in the rice fields, they have two menus, an Indonesian one and a European one and we can heartily recommend both.

Their chicken satay is juicy, soft and tender and we can’t get enough of it. It’s best combined with the sunset view over the paddies.

We’d also suggest their amazing fresh strawberry juice which is the perfect pick me up after a long day in the Bali sun.

FAQs

Is Balinese Food The Same As Indonesian Food?

Yes, technically Balinese food is Indonesian food but it is a technical thing. In reality, Balinese food (because the locals are Hindu) features much less beef than menus elsewhere in Indonesia and, instead, features pork which is forbidden (haram) to Muslims.

Of course, you can find both cuisines here in Bali and often in the same restaurant side-by-side. Though if a place says “babi” (pig) in the restaurant name or on the menu, you can be 100% certain that you’re eating Balinese food.

In fact, Indonesian is one of the most varied cuisines in the world with over 17,000 islands in the archipelago, you will find different styles of cooking throughout the land.

It’s one of the many reasons that Bali and Indonesia are such amazing places to spend a holiday.

What Are Some Must-Try Balinese Dishes In Canggu?

We find that Balinese food is quite delicious and it’s generally pretty palatable to all foreign tourists.

You might want to keep an eye out for:

  • Nasi campur – white rice and various accompaniments
  • Babi guling – roast suckling pig, typically served in small-ish portions with rice and veggies
  • Nasi goreng/mie goreng – fried rice or fried noodles respectively
  • Sate lilit – a minced Balinese sate with a slightly sweet edge to it, it can be made from fish or other meats including turtle
  • Ayam betutu – a sophisticated duck dish that requires 8 hours of preparation
  • Lawar (red and white) – a meat dish that’s very popular here, the red one takes its colour from animal blood in the rice, the white uses jackfruit instead of meat
  • Be pasih – a Balinese fish curry that is very different from Indian or Malay curries
  • Urab – a coconut dressed local salad
  • Pepes ikan – Bali’s favourite fish dish made with various fish as required
  • Sambal – the famous spicy sauce that is never the same twice (each restaurant has their own recipe for sambal)
