Want to buy a loaf of bread or a birthday cake in Canggu and not sure where to start? Well, the good news is that there are a lot of bakeries to choose from here on the island and many of them are in Canggu.

Our team hit the streets, on your behalf, to find the very best bakeries in the area and this is what they came up with – top amazing bakeries to satisfy your every baking-related need.

Our Top 10 Bakers In Canggu

Butterman

Butterman has one of the most inviting aesthetics of any bakery here in Canggu and every time we walk past, we find ourselves drawn through the doors.

It has a very French boulangerie vibe to it and the staff have the same attention and care for their customers and you’d find in a French bakery. The croissants are to die for.

We love that they serve many of their products fresh from the oven so that they’re still naturally warm. However, we do wish they’d keep the aircon on more on hot days inside the store, we like warm bread, not sweating ourselves.

Bread Basket Bakery – Canggu, Bali

Bread Basket Bakery is one of our favourite places in Bali. The interior is beautifully decorated, the food is immaculately presented and the vibe is just to our tastes.

They do an excellent bagel in the in-house cafe that is perfectly toasted and goes wonderfully well with some cream cheese.

However, it’s the croissants that keep us going back again and again, they’re so delicate and flakey with that rich buttery taste that makes these pastries such a wonderful way to start the day.

The Sweet Escape

The Sweet Escape has a rustic charm all of its own and it makes us feel like we’re in a bakery in the French countryside.

However, don’t mistake this simple appeal for a lack of complexity in their baking. In fact, they have one of the most versatile teams on the island and if you need gluten-free products, this should be your first stop.

Their birthday cakes are every bit as beautiful as they look online and if you’re looking to make someone’s party go with a bang, these cakes are guaranteed to put a smile on their face.

BRUNN Bakehaus

BRUNN has an excellent onsite cafe where you can enjoy some beautifully light and fluffy scrambled eggs on toast to start the day.

However, all of their baked goods are worth trying and their ham and cheese topped croissants are especially delightful.

We can heartily recommend getting a cup of coffee from them to take away with you, so that you can devour your croissants French-style when you get home.

Monsieur Spoon Canggu

Monsieur Spoon is a local bakery chain and you can find several branches across the island of Bali. They’re the ideal place to visit when you want guaranteed consistency in your baked goods.

They have an extremely large selection of goods to choose from and while none of them are quite “best in class”, they’re all tasty enough.

Our only gripe is that while prices have risen in Monsieur Spoon over the past few years, the quality hasn’t quite kept up with the price tag. It’s good but it could be great with a little extra effort.

Wheatfields by Starter Lab

There’s no doubt in our minds that Wheatfields elevate the humble craft of baking to an actual art form and everything they prepare is as beautiful as it is delicious.

There’s a real sense that the people who work here aren’t just doing this for the money, but they’re doing it for the love of creating sublimely tasty baked goods.

We also love the fact that it’s such a friendly environment and it’s the sort of place that we’d take guests to Canggu to, in order for them to see the best side of Bali.

Fold Canggu

If there’s one thing that we can’t resist when we visit Fold, it’s the pain au chocolat, we don’t think we’ve had one as good in France!

The pastry is crumbly and flakey without falling to pieces and it’s full of the most perfect balance of layers and chocolate. In fact, just writing this makes us want to visit again for another one.

We’re also big fans of the interior design of this bakery which feels truly traditional and proud of the humble roots of one of the most important culinary arts.

BAKED.Berawa

Baked is a small local chain of bakeries and they have branches in neighboring towns as well as Canggu. We think their bread is among the best on the island.

However, where their portions used to be generous to match the fairly substantive price tags that they charge for their sandwiches, they’re now quite tiny.

We’d recommend buying a loaf of bread here or some cakes and taking them home to build your own sandwiches.

Cook & Baker

We love the charm of this relatively unknown local bakery and it’s one of our go-to places for birthday cakes which always look amazing.

On a more regular basis, we can’t resist their sweet cinnamon rolls which smell every bit as good as they taste.

They also do a great range of gluten-free products if you need to consider your special dietary requirements before you use a baker.

Momma Cookies

You don’t visit Momma Cookies for anything other than cookies, but there’s no doubt that when the mood strikes you for some of these sweet treats, Momma Cookies does them best.

Try the raspberry toffee cookie and tell us that you’re not blown away by the creativity and flavour of this humble looking cookie store.

They also do a great cup of coffee and if you want to sit in the store to consume your purchases, they offer free Wi-Fi and laptop suitable tables for you to use.

FAQs

What’s The Most Popular Bakery Item?

It won’t come as a surprise to learn that the most popular item in most bakeries is fresh bread (or bread rolls). This is because for many people one of the staple carbohydrates in their diet is bread.

However, if you’re asking about non-bread products, there’s no official record of what the most popular products are – but we’d hazard a guess that chocolate chip cookies are very high on the list as almost every bakery on Earth seems to carry their own.

What’s The Most Famous Indonesian Cake?

Lapis Legit is the most famous cake in Indonesia. It’s a very clever cake that involves the use of many fine layers.

It’s not a local dish, it was actually introduced during the colonial era by the Dutch Colonists, however, it’s stuck around and is highly sought after in Indonesia today.

You should know that it’s not cheap even here in Bali. The ingenious methods of preparation require a lot of manual labour and the ingredients are also very high quality.

That means you can expect prices on a 1 Kg cake to start at around 750,000 IDR (that’s about $50 USD or $75 AUD) and depending on the bakery, it could be a lot more than that.

If you’re searching for a Ramadan Gift for someone special, then Lapis Legit is the best thing that you can bring.

The good news is that this cake will last 5-7 days when stored at room temperature, 12-14 days in the fridge, and 2-3 months in the freezer, so you don’t need to worry about any of it going to waste.

What Is A Traditional Balinese Cake?

Laklak is one of the best known Balinese cakes. It’s made from rice rather than white flour and it’s made in round, flat, small discs.

You can expect the discs to be around 3-5 cm across and to be 4-5 mm thick. They come in two colours; white and light green.

And no matter which colour you try, they are hard on one side and soft on the other. They are served with a red sugar sauce made from sugar, water and pandan leaves.

It’s important for us to note that Laklak is not a “baked cake” and instead, it’s made by frying the cakes in a skillet.
